TOWARD DEFINITION: AN EXAMINATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN CRAFT ART:
The articles in this issue were presented, or adapted from presentations made at Toward Definition: An Examination of African American Craft Art, a symposium hosted in Dayton, OH on November 12-12 1993, by the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. Toward Definition was implemented in conjunction with the first major exhibition of African American craft art to travel nationally, Uncommon Beauty in Common Objects:The Legacy of African American Craft Art. Both achieved unprecedented visual and verbal expression in a field long neglected by the American arts community. This isssue, illustrated with photography of art from the exhibition, historical artifacts and traditional techniques constitute a significant contribution to scholarship in the African American craft field.
