This issue highlights the important contributions African Americans have made to the design world. There is a tremendously rich heritage of design that flows from African roots. Architecture can be traced back to African origins. The greatest architectural wonders of the world--the Great Pyramids--still rest there. Africans were casting bronze and smelting iron long before Europeans. African fabric design is some of the most creative and vibrant in the world. The first furniture and tools ever created came from Africa. In fact, Dr. Louis Leakey, the renowned anthropologist, says that even man was designed in Africa! With this heightened awareness of design there has begun an emergence of a new design aesthetic in America. With the entry of greater numbers of African Americans into design we have begun the creation of an entirely new design reality.
